Member states sign off on 2030 energy targets

New EU targets on energy efficiency and renewable energy will come into force later this month alongside a new governance system for the energy union, after they were formally approved by the Council of the EU.

Under the new legislation, by 2030 the EU must obtain 32% of its total energy from renewable sources and increase energy efficiency by 32.5%, as set out in the Renewable Energy Directive (RED II) and the Energy Efficiency Directive.
