Southern European countries facing the risk of fast-spreading forest fires need to share cross-border solutions, the WWF warned on Thursday as it petitioned governments to join efforts to draw up an EU fire prevention strategy.
‘Superfires’ or ‘megafires’ are the terms given to a new generation of unmanageable fires that have appeared in Mediterranean Europe. They spread at a rate of up to 4,000 hectares per hour, are lethal and almost impossible to extinguish despite progress in firefighting techniques.
