EU must resist ‘industry pressure’ on plastic export rules, campaigners urge

The European Commission must support new global rules on the export of plastic waste, despite pressure from industry groups to exclude OECD countries, campaigners say

The European Commission must support new global rules on the export of plastic waste, despite pressure from industry groups to reject their application to shipments between OECD countries, green groups have said.

In an open letter to the Commission’s environment director-general, the groups urge the EU to advocate for all OECD countries to accept changes to the UN Basel Convention governing how plastic waste can be transferred.

Under the changes, exporters of unsorted or contaminated plastic waste will have to obtain the “prior informed consent” of authorities in the receiving country from the end of next year.
