Ursula von der Leyen, president designate of the European Commission, may have to increase her proposed climate action targets in order to win the backing of Socialist and liberal MEPs, it emerged today. 

Setting out her conditions for supporting von der Leyen, S&D president Iratxe García Peréz said the next Commission must set a binding target to cut the EU’s greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, up from its current 40% target.
