EU environment commissioner Karmenu Vella has called for 2020 to be a ‘Paris moment’ for global biodiversity protection and warned MEPs that Europe “cannot fail again” as the gravity of the extinction crisis increases.

With China to host a major conference of parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 15) next year, Vella said on Wednesday that the EU has the opportunity to showcase commitment within the EU and globally.
