The EU commissioner-designate for environment and oceans appears to have passed his confirmatory hearing in the European parliament, with the chairs of the fisheries and environment committees by turn describing the Lithuanian candidate as a safe pair of hands and welcoming his commitments to restrict endocrine disrupting chemicals and act against deforestation.
Fisheries committee chair Chris Davies welcomed the fact that Virginijus Sinkevicius had refused to give way when under pressure from several members to agree that part of the €6 billion European Maritime and Fisheries Fund be used to finance new fishing vessels.
