Europe’s inland shipping network is being overlooked as a green alternative and needs more clarity on appropriate tech, industry representatives have warned.
The comments came at a showcase of vessels with low or zero carbon and NOx technologies such as batteries, LNG, hydrogen and even Euro 6 truck engine retrofits. A common complaint among shipowners, however, was uncertainty over which green technology would be pursued by the EU as well as a lack of on-shore infrastructure, such as charging stations.
