EU countries are losing out on “opportunities to reuse a significant amount of valuable resources” due to inefficient waste management, the European Environment Agency (EEA) warned on Monday. 

Having relied on exporting their waste for many years, EU countries now “face a dilemma” on how to deal with the millions of tonnes of waste generated each year, the agency claims. It follows import bans in Asian countries and the inclusion of new types of plastics in the UN’s Basel Convention on transboundary shipments of waste.
