European leaders have said the Trump administration’s formal withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement will not change the rest of the world’s commitment to fighting climate change.
The US government has triggered a year-long process to leave the deal, meaning it will technically remain a signatory until the day after the next presidential election in November 2020.
“In international climate discussions, we will continue to offer a realistic and pragmatic model,” said US secretary of state Mike Pompeo. “The United States will continue to research, innovate, and grow our economy while reducing emissions.”
