Europe should not look to recycling as its main response to pollution and CO2 emissions linked to plastic, according to the European Commission’s top official for the European Green Deal.

“In the public debate all too often recycling is seen as the best we can do,” European Commission vice-president Frans Timmermans said on Tuesday. “Re-use is the best we can do, and I think this should be part of the… legislation we will have to prepare.”
