The gas industry will play a crucial role in a “holistic” strategy to reduce the EU’s methane emissions, a European Commission has said.

Monika Zsigri, a policy officer at the EU executive’s energy directorate-general, said that a long-awaited methane strategy “needs to be holistic”, while noting that its timeline for implementation and its strategic direction will be determined by the incoming college of commissioners.

Speaking at a conference in the European Parliament, she added that the strategy will need to encompass the entire energy supply chain, which will require an improvement in monitoring mechanisms.
