EU executive set to drop ‘non-toxic environment strategy’

EXCLUSIVE: The European Commission appears to have abandoned a planned ‘strategy for a non-toxic environment’ that it was supposed to deliver last year, with a source in the EU executive's environment directorate telling ENDS the idea was now seen as “outdated”.

Incoming environment commissioner Virginijus Sinkevicius was non-committal when repeatedly pressed during his recent parliamentary hearing to state his intentions regarding the strategy, which was due for delivery “by 2018” under the seventh EU Environmental Action Programme (EAP). He eventually suggested it would be part of a broader ‘zero-pollution’ goal.
