Proposed restrictions of lead in PVC ‘not protective enough’, say NGOs

Environment and consumer groups have called on EU member states to reject a proposal that would allow higher concentrations of lead in recycled PVC materials than virgin ones.

Representatives of EU member states will discuss the European Commission’s proposal to restrict the use of lead in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) at the REACH Committee meeting of November 19-20.

In a letter, a coalition of NGOs said that they support the EU executive’s proposal to restrict the use of lead in PVC "as it will reduce emissions of this highly toxic chemical". However, they caution that the proposal is "not protective enough".
