Commission pesticides data draws scepticism

Environmental campaigners have greeted with scepticism new data suggesting a fall in the toxic impact of pesticides between 2011 and 2017.

The indicators, whose first results were published last week, were established by the European Commission under the Directive on the Sustainable Use of Pesticides in 2009. 

The first indicator, which considers the quantity of pesticides sold in the EU weighted by a toxicity factor, “shows a 20% reduction in the risk to human health and the environment” between 2011 and 2017, the Commission said.
