Campaigners have warned that the EU’s flagship programme for supporting coal regions to transition is at risk of undermining its own aims if industry is allowed to delay phase-out. 

In an open letter published on the first day of the annual political dialogue of the EU’s platform for coal regions in transition in Görlitz, Germany, green group Europe Beyond Coal warned that the programme, which brings together representatives of carbon intensive regions, “is at risk of undermining the ‘transition’ in its name, if incumbent industry interests vested in delaying the exit from coal are allowed to hold back progress by proposing false coal-based solutions”.
