Offshore wind industry gearing up for huge deployment drive

The offshore wind industry is ready to meet EU aspirations for 450 gigawatts of capacity by 2050, but it will need innovation, closer cooperation with policymakers and upgrades to the transmission grid, stakeholders heard in Copenhagen on Tuesday

Speaking at an offshore wind conference and exhibition hosted by lobby group WindEurope, policymakers and industry leaders agreed the ambitious target was possible but extremely demanding. Europe’s offshore wind capacity currently stands at 20GW.

A report released by WindEurope at the event, identified supply chain stability, grid upgrades and spatial planning as the major hurdles facing the offshore wind industry in Europe.
