‘Climate cannot wait’, von der Leyen Commission told

Green groups and political leaders have warned that the new European Commission, led by president-elect Ursula von der Leyen, must deliver ground-breaking climate policies if it is to live up to expectations.

Von der Leyen’s college of commissioners, who will take over the EU executive on 1 December, was approved by the European Parliament on Wednesday by 461 votes to 157 against, with 89 abstentions mostly coming from the Greens and leftist GUE/NGL group.

The Commission is expected to unveil on 11 December details of the highly anticipated European Green Deal, which is reported to set out plans for €3tn of investment in climate protection by 2030.
