At a biofuels aviation event in Brussels, Kyriakos Maniatis, director of the European Commission’s transport directorate-general (DG MOVE), explained that without a carbon tax, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) will “always remain more expensive than kerosene”.
The reason, he said, comes down to the fact that SAFs “depend on the cost and availability of the raw materials, such as feedstocks… They are not free like wind energy or sunlight.”
