Without aviation tax, kerosene will ‘always be’ cheaper than alternatives, EC official says

Without a carbon tax for the aviation industry, biofuels and sustainable advanced fuels will always be more expensive than fossil fuels, an EU transport official has said.

At a biofuels aviation event in Brussels, Kyriakos Maniatis, director of the European Commission’s transport directorate-general (DG MOVE), explained that without a carbon tax, sustainable aviation fuels (SAFs) will “always remain more expensive than kerosene”.

The reason, he said, comes down to the fact that SAFs “depend on the cost and availability of the raw materials, such as feedstocks… They are not free like wind energy or sunlight.”
