EU must strengthen industrial policy to drive decarbonisation, says expert group

EU policymakers must reform public procurement rules, strengthen research and development, and secure industry’s access to alternative energy and feedstocks if high-emitting sectors are to help the bloc reach carbon neutrality by 2050.

Industry groups, member states and public investment banks sitting on the high level expert group on energy-intensive industries made the recommendations as part of a ‘masterplan’ on sustainable industrial strategy.

“The successful research, development, upscaling and deployment of technologies that will put [energy intensive industries] on the path towards climate-neutrality requires a fully integrated industrial strategy, underpinned by a strong governance,” they say.
