Green groups warn of ‘flood’ of toxic toys from China

The European market is “flooded” with toxic toys from China, an analysis by the European Environmental Bureau (EEB) has revealed.

The umbrella group of green NGOs has crunched the 2019 data collected by EU Rapex, the system alerting national government officials across Europe about dangerous consumer goods.

So far this year, officials have blocked 248 models of toy, likely corresponding to tens of millions of units, after tests showed they contained toxic chemicals beyond permitted levels, the analysis says. The vast majority (88%) came from China. Some 228 (92%) were categorised as posing a “serious risk”.
