A decarbonised central Europe ‘will not happen without natural gas’

A top EU official has said that natural gas will play a vital role in decarbonising Europe’s energy sector.

“To be very blunt, if we want to decarbonise further central Europe and south-east Europe, it will not happen without natural gas,” said Klaus-Dieter Borchardt, deputy director general of the European Commission’s energy directorate-general (DG ENER). “Let me be clear,” he added, “there is no such alternative”.

Borchardt made the comments during a keynote speech to energy representatives from the central European states.
