Policy briefing: the just transition fund

A multi-billion just transition fund to support communities in Europe's coal-heavy regions is a priority for Ursula von der Leyen's new Commission, with legislation expected in the first two weeks of December. Here's what you need to know

What’s proposed?

Included in European Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyen’s European Green Deal package, a Just Transition Fund (JTF) aims to support people and regions adversely affected by the energy transition with tailored support.

A European Parliament proposal initiated in the industry and energy committee (ITRE) by Polish centre-right MEP Jerzy Buzek, would see a specific allocation of €4.8bn for a Just Energy Transition Fund in the 2021-2027 multi-annual financial framework (MFF) long-term budget. The Parliament's proposal would address social, socio-economic and environmental impacts on workers and communities adversely affected by the transition.
