The European chemicals industry has come under close scrutiny in recent years, with growing calls from civil society for tougher regulation only reinforced by recent revelations of widespread failures in compliance with the EU's flagship Regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH). Meanwhile, the European Commission has been under pressure to produce the strategy for a 'non-toxic environment' it failed to publish last year.
