According to a draft of the ministerial declaration that will be signed at the event, countries will make the bold decision “to scale up efforts” and adopt “national plans to progressively achieve 100% plastic waste collection and recycling”.
The draft statement recognises that plastics account for up to 95% of floating marine litter and more than 50% of seabed litter in the Mediterranean, with more than 60% originating from single-use plastic products. Recent studies have revealed a threefold increase in litter at the bottom of the Mediterranean since the 1990s.
