State of the Environment report suggests EU heading for disaster

Pressure on EU leaders to take urgent action on climate change and environmental destruction has increased several notches as the European Environment Agency (EEA) published the sixth and bleakest edition to date of its five-yearly report and forecast.

The Copenhagen-based EU agency warned that a drastic “change of direction” would be needed to meet even existing policy goals as it released the “most comprehensive environmental assessment ever undertaken on Europe” on Wednesday, a year ahead of schedule.

“Europe will not achieve its sustainability vision of ‘living well within the limits of the planet’ by continuing to promote economic growth and seeking to manage the environmental and social impacts,” the EEA said.
