MEPs question Mercosur trade deal’s ‘green’ credentials

MEPs have demanded stronger enforcement mechanisms and sanctions to address issues such as the potential impact on Amazon deforestation of the recently agreed EU-Mercosur trade deal.

French Greens/EFA member Yannick Jadot, whose group promoted the debate on whether the EU-Mercosur deal aligns with the European Green Deal (EGD), demanded the EU “do not even consider signing the agreement”.

The EU and Mercosur countries, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay, reached in June a political agreement still subject to endorsement by national governments and parliaments, and the European Parliament. Austria, France and Ireland are set to block the deal under current conditions.
