Italy to introduce plastic tax in 2020

Italy is to introduce a tax on plastic packaging next summer as part of the 2020 budget law voted by the senate on Monday and expected to be confirmed by the lower chamber next week.

The tax of €0.45/kg will apply to single-use plastic packaging manufactured or imported to Italy and will take effect on 1 July 2020. The amount was reduced from €1/kg initially proposed by the government, following criticism from industry, as well as from consumer and environmental organisations.

Rossella Accoto (Five Star Movement), co-rapporteur in the senate, said with the tax the government intends to “use the fiscal lever to promote a change in production models” and to support “consumption behaviours that pay more attention to citizens’ health.”
