Demands for €100bn transition support to be linked to coal phase-out plans

Environmentalists and policy experts have called on the European Commission to ensure its new €100bn fund to support the energy transition is linked to plans to phase out fossil fuels.

Commissioners will meet on Tuesday to discuss the Just Transition Fund (JTF) outlined by president Ursula von der Leyen last month as part of her European Green Deal policy package.

WWF on Thursday set out what it says are five crucial criteria for the fund, including that it must be part of “comprehensive regional plans” for climate neutrality that set “phase-out dates for fossil fuels”.
