Environment groups resist voluntary deforestation measures

As the European Parliament prepares a proposal for an EU-level standard on imported deforestation, green groups are resisting a lean towards voluntary methods.

At the international forest and biodiversity conference in Brussels on Tuesday, the EU’s delegates considered measures to reduce the deforestation footprint outside of the union. 

Astrid Schomaker, director for global sustainable development at the European Commission's directorate general for the environment, said: “The EU plays a significant role in global deforestation”, citing the impact of meat, soya, dairy supply chains.
