EU high representative sparks row with ‘Greta syndrome’ comments

MEPs have criticised comments by the the EU’s high representative in which he appeared to mock youth climate activists.

Lawmakers called on the European Commission to say whether comments made by Josep Borrell on Wednesday, in which he referred to the “Greta syndrome” - refering to campaigner Greta Thunberg - and questioning the commitment of young people to climate action, represent the official view of the EU executive.

Spokesperson Eric Mamer sought to distance the commission from its foreign affairs chief on Friday, commenting that it “supports the aspirations of young people” in relation to tackling the climate crisis.
