MEPs veto recycling of lead-containing plastic

MEPs have vetoed a European Commission proposal that would allow for recycled PVC products to be exempt from a ban on lead, as they found it clashes with the principles of the REACH regulation.

The objection was adopted on Wednesday with 394 votes for, 241 against and 13 abstentions, as lawmakers found shortcomings in restricting the use of lead and its compounds in PVC articles to a maximum concentration limit of 0.1% by weight of virgin material.
