EU circular economy plan: 9 things you need to know

The European Commission unveiled a new action plan on a circular economy on Wednesday pursuant to its green deal roadmap. ENDS highlights the key issues.

1 The commission sees it as a step to achieve carbon neutrality
According to the action plan there is potential for synergy between a circular and carbon-neutral economy. But while the action plan sets a concrete goal to double the circular material usage in the coming decade, it does not set targets for reducing resource use.

2 It aims to tackle plastic pollution
The commission aims to introduce restrictions on microplastics intentionally added to products along with measures to combat the unintentional release of microplastics in the environment. It also plans to promote bio-based and biodegradable plastics and introduce restrictions on plastic waste.
