Mixed reaction to role of waste in circular economy plan

Anti-rubbish campaigners at Zero Waste Europe have described the new Circular Economy Action Plan (CEAP) as a “nice patchwork of initiatives pointing in the right direction”, but industry groups have shown mixed reactions to the latest instalment of the European Green Deal.

“Now the EU has to glue the pieces together to ensure that circular zero waste activities are more convenient and economic than the current, failing, linear ones,” said ZWE director Joan Marc Simon of the plan launched in Brussels on Wednesday.

The campaign group welcomed the overall focus on ensuring products are durable and repairable. “However, from a systemic perspective, a sustainable product strategy isn’t enough to deliver a sustainable Europe,” it said.
