Waste industry calls for new landfill targets

European waste industry groups have called on the European Commission to include a cap on the amount of commercial and industrial waste sent to landfill in its circular economy plan in order to promote recycling and incineration for energy recovery.

Lobby groups representing the ‘waste-to-energy’, district heating and waste management sectors said in a joint statement on Thursday that the commission’s New Circular Economy Action Plan (NCEAP) was missing “cornerstone” measures to “prevent the leaking of waste streams suitable for recycling or recovery to large scale landfills”.
