Covid-19: Environmentalists dismiss industry climate concerns over biofuel production

Industry groups have warned that derogations by member states from EU targets for the use of crop biofuels could jeopardise climate commitments.

Environmental groups, however, said derogations could be better for the climate and accused the industry of using a “false climate narrative” as a shield. 

In a letter to European Commission vice-president Frans Timmermans sent on Tuesday, biofuel industry groups said a cut to biofuels production in response to falling demand amid the Covid-19 shutdown, could lead to an increase in greenhouse gas emissions.
