Hydrogen hasn't been so high on the news agenda since president George W Bush announced in 2003 “a $1.2bn hydrogen fuel initiative to help reduce America's dependence on oil”. That things didn't turn out quite as expected is evidenced by this line from the accompanying fact sheet: “America imports 55% of the oil it consumes; that is expected to grow to 68% by 2025.” As we all know, the Americans are giving the stuff away these days.
