What to look out for this month

October will see important discussions on the EU’s proposed climate and energy package. The highlight is a meeting of EU environment ministers in Luxembourg beginning on 20 October, which will also debate the EU’s negotiating position for December’s UN climate talks in Poznan´.
The parliament’s environment committee will vote on three key elements of the package on 7 October: revision of the EU emission trading scheme (EU ETS), member states’ 2020 emission-reduction targets and an EU legal framework for carbon capture and storage (CCS).
In October the European commission may issue proposals to revise EU laws on waste electrical and electronic equipment (Weee) and the restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS). The commission is also expected to adopt a policy paper on adaptation to climate change.
