Forest labels get under PEFC umbrella
The number of national sustainable forestry labelling schemes endorsed by the controversial pan-European forest certification (PEFC) scheme is set to rise to ten following submission of Swiss and Belgian initiatives for assessment. Schemes in Germany, Austria, Norway, Sweden and Finland are already endorsed, and assessments are underway for Czech, French and Latvian systems. Further submissions are expected from Canada, Portugal and Spain (ENDS Daily 6 April). The Swiss and Belgian forest certification schemes are expected to add only around 600,000 hectares to the PEFC's current total of 36m hectares of certified forests. More information from PEFC, including press release.
