German initiative to double bicycling
Germany's ruling socialist (SPD) and Green parties have launched an initiative to double the share of transport taken by cycling by 2010. The proposals, which would be implemented by central, state and municipal governments, will be debated in parliament on Thursday. Supporters emphasise the environmental, health and economic benefits of cycling and recommend it plays a bigger role in an integrated transport policy. They say growth in cycling should be achieved on existing roads rather than by building dedicated cycle paths and that the interface with public transport must be improved. See press release.
