Lithuania closes green accession chapter
Lithuania this week became the fifth candidate EU member state to agree on the environmental terms of its entry to the bloc. Under an accord brokered by the Swedish presidency, Lithuania will get transition periods to implement three EU green laws: it has until the end of 2009 to implement the 1991 urban waste water treatment directive, until end 2006 for the 1994 packaging and packaging waste directive, and until end 2007 for a 1994 directive controlling volatile organic compound emissions from petrol storage and distribution.
