Commission welcomes EU sustainability drive
EU leaders gave a "clear indication" that Europe must move in the direction of sustainable development at the Gothenburg summit, even if they rejected most of the European Commission's specific policy proposals, MEPs heard yesterday. Giving the Commission's official reaction to the summit, environment chief Margot Wallström welcomed what she described as a commitment to "improve the way in which we make policy". "These are important decisions," she said in front of the European Parliament, "because sustainable development is a process that requires effective procedures." See Ms Wallström's speech.
