Landowners back green farm funding shift
European rural landowners have welcomed the EU's new agri-environment funds introduced under the Agenda 2000 reform package, calling for total spending on work to protect and preserve the countryside to be quintupled to euros 10bn per year. Following a meeting in Milan, the European Landowners Organisation (ELO) also suggested creation of a single, EU-wide agri-environment scheme, based on a simple area payment concept for management standards to meet agreed environmental outcomes.
