First draft Welsh waste strategy published
A draft waste strategy for Wales was published last week by the Welsh national assembly. Currently, 95% of municipal waste in Wales is landfilled and the strategy's overriding aim is to reduce this figure in line with requirements under the 1999 EU landfill directive. However, the strategy goes one step further and proposes waste minimisation targets for household, public sector and commercial waste. For instance, the assembly has proposed that individual businesses reduce arisings by 5% by 2005 based on a 1998 baseline. See draft strategy.
