"Green passport" proposed for new ships

A coalition of shipping industry organisations has proposed a code of practice on ship recycling responding to growing concerns over environmental and health impacts. Dismantling is concentrated almost exclusively in developing countries and green groups have accused rich countries of exporting pollution (EED 15/02/01). The code includes an inventory of potentially hazardous materials, to be completed before a vessel's last voyage. The group says it also wants to discuss the ship builders the idea of creating a "green passport" for new vessels, detailing the materials they contain. See press release and code of practice.
