EU Commission to seek EMAS registration
The European Commission today pledged to "set an example for other public authorities and economic operators to follow" by working towards registration under the EU's environmental management standard, EMAS. A two-year pilot phase is to be led by the executive's secretariat general and administration and environment directorates. The "final objective" is for the entire organisation to seek registration. The EMAS scheme was officially opened to public authorities this summer; about 138 such organisations have already set up environmental management systems, the Commission noted today.
