Plastics recycling study endorsed

The Association of plastics manufacturers in Europe (Apme) yesterday announced that four independent scientists had endorsed a controversial plastics packaging waste management study published last year (EED 07/02/00). Sponsored by Apme, the study predicted only marginal environmental gains as recycling rates are pushed above 15%, while costs could triple. The European Commission is set to propose new EU rules on packaging waste management in October, probably including a 20% recycling target for plastics packaging (EED 19/06/01). See press release.
