Danish anti-MTBE tax gets EU thumbs-up

EU justice and home affairs ministers have approved a groundbreaking Danish fiscal plan to prevent groundwater contamination around fuel stations by the petrol additive MTBE. Acting on a European Commission recommendation, the ministers backed Copenhagen's introduction of tax breaks amounting to euros 0.02 (DKr0.03) per litre on petrol sold at stations that have fitted leak-resistant underground storage tanks (EED 23/05/01).
