European coastal eutrophication surveyed

The status of eutrophication in European coastal waters is reviewed in a new report from the European environment agency. While noting a general decline in nitrogen and phosphorus inputs since the 1980s, the report expresses concern over the fast growing aquaculture sector, described as "the major threat" in Arctic waters and as contributing a comparable nutrient load to agriculture in the Mediterranean. All countries are urged to help reduce serious data gaps on eutrophication by reporting more thoroughly on the status of coastal waters. See report.
