French court rules in Erika oil spill case

Oil giant TotalFinaElf has been ordered to pay the French state euros 7.6m by Saturday in an ongoing judicial inquiry into the Erika oil spill, it was revealed yesterday. Coincidentally, today is the second anniversary of the devastating spill (EED 07/01/00). The Paris court of appeal has also ruled that TotalFinaElf must no longer charter tankers older than 15 years to transport certain types of crude oil. The inquiry continues, with the next stage focusing on a number of individual employees' alleged personal responsibility. See Paris court of appeal.
