Swiss "contravening GATT" rules on transport

The International road transport union (IRU) has accused the Swiss government of contravening international trade laws guaranteeing the free movement of goods by restricting lorry access to the St Gothard tunnel. IRU says that new safety measures have caused "massive congestion and delays" without improving safety and that a potential SFr5,000 (euros 3,378) infrastructure charge for lorries using the St Gothard motorway and tunnel would be "irresponsible and unacceptable". Last autumn, a fire in the tunnel caused by two lorries colliding led to 11 deaths (EED 30/10/01). See press release.
